Bobby Chacon had battled pugilistic dementia for some two decades, but he always found a way to make appearances at local boxing cards and was always smiling and cracking jokes.

Chacon, the pride of Pacoima, lost his last fight Wednesday when he died at age 64. Details of his death are not clear.

Chacon — nicknamed “Schoolboy” — boxed professionally from 1972-88, compiling a record of 59-7-1 with 47 knockouts while wiing world titles in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions. His ninth-round stoppage of Day “Little Red” Lopez in 1974 at the L.A. Sports Arena was just one of Chacon’s many epic victories.
