“We play when we want to play,” said Lancers coach Mike Wadley, whose team let its foot off the gas pedal in the third set.

The Lancers were without a starting back row player and didn’t always have crisp passing. But front row players Destynie Viliamu and Julia Crawford were solid wire-to-wire. Viliamu had 14 kills, five aces and two blocks and Crawford had 12 kills and three blocks.

“We could have done better, but it was great to start with a win,” Viliamu said.

NEWPORT HARBOR 10, WILSON 7 >> Unforced errors and some bad luck kept the Bruins from rallying in their season opener at Belmont Outdoor Pool. The Sailors took an early lead through Coor Turnbow-Lindestadt, who scored a game-high four goals, and led, 6-3, at halftime.

Bruins Mark Applegate and Garret Harryman scored the first two goals in the second half to pull Wilson within one goal, but a missed 5-meter shot allowed Newport Harbor to catch its breath and score four of the final six goals of the game. Jack Berg scored twice for Wilson and goalkeeper Seth Seebach made nine saves.

“(Newport Harbor) took advantage of our mistakes,” Wilson coach Jeff Nesmith said. “They capitalized with great outside shooting. But we recognize the mistakes we made, and we feel like we can fix it.”

Wilson hosts Los Alamitos Sept. 13 at Belmont.
