Long Beach native Scott Dickson, a member of the LB Yacht Club, took control on the second day of the 38th Ficker Cup, the annual match-racing qualifier for next week’s Congressional Cup. Dickson sits atop the scoreboard with an 11-3 record after six wins on Saturday.

There was a first for the long-running event on Saturday, as competition was halted due to a private boat floating in the racing waters during the countdown to the start of a match. The boat was scattering ashes at sea and did not initially leave the area when instructed to.

“I thought I’d seen everything in match racing,” said LBYC waterfront director Rick Roberts in a statement.

The semifinals and finals will continue Sunday in the waters off the Belmont Memorial Pier, at noon. The top two racers from Sunday will qualify for the Congressional Cup, which runs next week March 28 through April 2 in the same location.
