Area Roundup: Long Beach State wins 2016-17 Big West Commissioner's Cup

Long Beach State was awarded the 2016-17 Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup, it was announced Thursday.

The award is given to the school with the best athletics program, encompassing all 17 sports. The 49ers have won the award in six of the last seven years, and seven of the last nine. The 49ers averaged 116.7 points with UC Santa Barbara in second and Cal Poly third.

Long Beach State had only one conference championship (baseball) in 2016-17, but it had nine sports that finished in the top three.
