Alex Midler had home turf advantage in the opening round of the Dew Tour’s first round of amateur competition on Thursday on the grounds of the Long Beach Convention Center.
The Los Angeles resident had the highest score among 54 amateurs in the three-part street course skateboard semifinals. Midler had a score of 261.40 out of 300 points to edge Maurio McCoy of Reading, Pesylvania by 0.40 points.
Pro athletes take to the street course on Friday for the same three-part qualifying. Also on Friday is the amateur bowl qualifier.
Midley had the top score in the technical portion (85.00) and rails (87.40). McCoy led in gaps (89.00). Jack Olson of St. Louis Park, Miesota is in third place, 21 points behind the pair.
The amateur field has been tripled in size with fans and pros judging videos to determine the entrants.
It is the Dew Tour’s second year in Long Beach. It is produced by The Enthusiast Network.
Competition, which has free viewing, starts at 11 a.m. Friday. The event concludes Sunday.
