The St. John Bosco defense shined at the Edison High School “Battle at the Beach” 7v7 event on a hot Saturday afteoon. The Braves went 3-1 in pool play and defeated Cathedral and Edison in the first two rounds of the Gold Division pool play before falling 7-6 to Mater Dei in the championship.
“I was pleased with the overall performance of the team today, both offensively and defensively,” Bosco coach Jason Negro said. “The biggest thing was to be able to compete against good opponents and I thought we did a pretty coach job of that today.”
It was a sluggish start to the round-robin play for the Braves as junior quarterback Re-al Mitchell threw a pair of interceptions against Cathedral. The Braves, however, battled back to win 22-11.
“I think we need to a better job with coming with our ‘A’ game every single time, but then we kind of grinded it out and played better at the end and I was happy with that performance,” Negro said
After defeating Edison 20-12, the Braves faced a familiar foe in Mater Dei in the championship, and both defenses played tight and allowed little separation for the receivers in a low-scoring game.
With a little less than seven weeks until Bosco opens the season at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida, Negro’s focus for the defending CIF Southe Section Division 1 and CIF State Open champs is getting stronger in the weight room.
“We have to keep grinding and keep working hard,” Negro said. “We have a lot of skill and we are going to be really good in all positions and we have some depth, but we have to do a good job of preparing ourselves and our bodies to play in 15 weeks.”
