The Rams made a big move to boost their young group of receivers Friday when they acquired Sammy Watkins from Buffalo in a trade for coerback E.J. Gaines and the Rams’ 2018 second-round draft pick.

The Rams also acquired Buffalo’s sixth-round pick in the deal that brings Watkins, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft and a 1,000-yard receiver two years ago.

Watkins, listed at 6-foot-1, 211 pounds, should be a primary target for quarterback Jared Goff, and Watkins will be reunited with receiver Robert Woods, his former teammate in Buffalo.

A former standout at Clemson, Watkins totaled 982 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie in 2014, then 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015. Last season, a foot injury limited Watkins to eight games and he finished with 430 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bills recently declined their fifth-year contract option on Watkins, so he is set to become a free agent at the end of this season.

Gaines had become expendable for the Rams after the offseason signings of coerbacks Kayvon Webster and Nickell Robey-Coleman.
