A brief look at UCLA’s training camp practice at Spaulding Field:
The offense won its third consecutive competition with the defense by scoring three touchdowns and a field goal on four 25-yard drives. Ruing back Bolu Olorunfunmi, aided by a nice block from fullback Giovai Gentosi, scored a 16-yard touchdown for the No. 1 offense on the first drive. On the first play of the third team’s drive, freshman Austin Burton coected with Eldridge Massington for a 25-yard touchdown, and Josh Rosen finished the drill with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Theo Howard. Devon Modster and the second-team offense settled for a 37-yard field goal from J.J. Molson.
Wide receiver Darren Andrews had a standout day in one-on-ones against the defensive backs. The senior from Bishop Amat twice burned safety Mossi Johnson on 30-yard touchdowns with exceptional route ruing. Andrews ran another great route against cornerback Darnay Holmes, but was rewarded with an underthrown ball that was out of his reach.
Wide receiver Demetric Felton and ruing back Brandon Stephens practiced in yellow, no-contact jerseys. Felton suffered an undisclosed injury during Saturday’s practice while Stephens hasn’t participated in a full practice since Aug. 7.
“I grew up a Bruin, I went to UCLA games when I was half the height I am now, so I’ve always just wanted to get on the field. ... At the end of the day it just comes down to, if I’m on the field then I’m happy, my parents are happy and that’s all I really care about.” — Walk-on punter Stefan Flintoft on whether he’s focused on earning a scholarship
