Area roundup: LBSU men's basketball hits the road; high school volleyball, badminton, golf get underway

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team is set to begin the final week of the regular season with a rivalry game at Cal State Fullerton tonight at 7.

The 49ers (16-13, 10-4 Big West Conference) have won seven of their last eight contests and will look to keep the momentum rolling against a struggling Titan squad they defeated 70-57 on Feb. 20.

With its win over UC Riverside on Saturday, LBSU extended its streak of seasons with 10 or more Big West wins to six, the longest in school history.

Long Beach closes out the regular season Saturday when it hosts first-place Hawaii (23-4, 12-2) at 4 p.m.

JC softball

LONG BEACH CITY 8, LA HARBOR 5 >> The Vikings (8-7, 3-2 South Coast Conference) got a boost from a three-run home run by freshman Daisy Velasquez (Bellflower HS) and Briaa Alvarez added three RBIs of her own en route to a conference win at home Tuesday afteoon.

Long Beach led 8-1 after three iings, but Harbor rallied for two runs the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Freshman Anissa Hamilton (Downey HS) picked up the win in the circle after allowing two eaed runs and five hits over five iings, while sophomore Brooke Loard (Millikan HS) got her first save.

LBCC retus to action on Thursday when it travels to Pasadena City for a 2 p.m. SCC game.

JC baseball

LONG BEACH CITY 7, ANTELOPE VALLEY 1 >> The Vikings improved to 7-6 with a nonconference win at home after pulling away with a five-run seventh iing.

The two-game series shifts to AVC in Lancaster for the finale on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Boys volleyball

GAHR 3, LAKEWOOD 1 >> The Gladiators opened the 2016 campaign with a 25-14, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15 victory behind Zachary Ayala (15 kills, eight digs), Jared Veola (14 kills) and Niko Lopez (40 assists, five digs, two aces).

WARREN 3, BELLFLOWER 1 >> Despite 11 kills from Arick Mom and 10 from Edgar Sanchez, the Bucs couldn’t hold on at home in a 25-20, 18-25, 25-16, 25-16 loss to begin the season.

Badminton

POLY 20, CABRILLO 1 >> The defending Moore League champion Jackrabbits had no trouble at home as they rolled to a season-opening victory.

Poly swept in mixed doubles, boys singles, girls singles and boys doubles, while the team of Patricia Rapada and Cassandra Bencito gave the Jaguars (0-2) their lone victory in girls doubles.

Eric Lam, Sambo Kim, Kristine Nguyen and Mary Nguyen each went 2-0 for Poly in mixed doubles and singles.

Boys golf

Wilson High opened the season Monday afteoon with a first-place finish out of 16 teams during the Servite Invitational at Weste Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.

The Bruins finished with an overall score of 373 to edge out Mater Dei (379), while the host Friars came in seventh (398) and Los Alamitos finished eighth with a score of 401.

Wilson senior Hunter Epson took home individual medalist honors with a 2-under round of 70, which included four birdies. Epson was tied with Mater Dei’s Issei Tanabe after 18 holes and the two went to a sudden-death playoff, which Epson won on the first hole.

Wilson senior Andrew Feandes made four birdies and finished in third place with a 71.

The Bruins will be in Dallas, Texas, on Friday and Saturday to play in the Lay Wadkins Cup at Bent Tree Country Club.
