Area Roundup: Long Beach State men's basketball win on senior night

Long Beach State men’s basketball seniors Nick Faust and A.J. Spencer celebrated Senior Night the right way on Saturday in Walter Pyramid. The only two seniors on the 49ers roster led the home team to a come-from-behind 74-72 win over Hawaii. Faust scored a team-high 19 points while Spencer added 11 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Sophomore guard Justin Bibbins chipped in 11 points and six assists for Long Beach State (18-13, 12-4) while Travis Hammonds came off the bench to score 13 points on eight shots. Aaron Valdes led Hawaii (24-5, 13-3) with 19 points. Hawaii still clinched a share of the Big West regular-season championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the Big West Touament this week. Long Beach State will open the touament on Thursday night at Honda Center, facing UC Riverside at 8:30 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Long Beach State 79, Cal State Northridge 69 >> Two 20-point performances from juniors Raven Benton and Madison Montgomery carried the 49ers to BWC victory on the road in the regular-season finale. Benton had a team-high 27 points while Montgomery posted a career-high 22 points. Long Beach State (23-7, 12-4) will be the third or second seed for the upcoming Big West Conference Touament, depending on late results. College baseball

Long Beach State 1-3, Nebraska 0-1 >> Dirtbags pitchers had to throw 22 iings of baseball in a doubleheader at Blair Field, and they allowed just a single run to lead Long Beach State to a pair of wins over the visiting Nebraska Cohuskers. Darren McCaughan got the no decision in the opening game, and Alex Muzzi delivered a walkoff single with two outs in the bottom of the 13th iing to give the Dirtbags a shutout win. In the second game, Taer Brown went seven strong iings and Garrett Nelson’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth iing.

Men’s volleyball

Long Beach State 3, Pe State 1 >> The top-ranked 49ers (17-2) extended their wining streak to 11 matches with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23 3-1 victory at No. 6 Pe State. Long Beach State freshman TJ DeFalco had his third straight double-double with a match-high 21 kills to go along with 10 digs, six blocks and two aces. Freshman setter Josh Tuaniga directed the offense with 45 assists.

Women’s teis

Long Beach State 4, UC Davis 0 >> Despite not finishing the full slate of matches, the 49ers (7-2) swept the Aggies in Big West action. It was the 23rd consecutive Big West win for Long Beach State.

Prep baseball

GAHR 9, TUSTIN 0 >> After a an opening-round loss at the Newport Elks Touament, the Gladiators bounced back with a shutout victory. Gahr senior Chris Corral threw five shutout iings and struck out five.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, OXFORD ACADEMY 2 >> The Crusaders (3-1) won the Newport Elks Touament game in eight iings. Brent Van Meeteren’s grounder forced an error and RJ Van Kampen scored the wiing run. Travis French and Brett Garcia each had an RBI for Valley Christian while pitcher Brett Garcia went 7 2/3 iings for the no decision. Jarod Trader picked up the win in relief. The Crusaders (2-0) will host westminster La Quinta on Monday at 3 p.m.

Prep golf

Wilson traveled to Dallas, Texas and won the Lay Wadkins Cup for the third consecutive time at Bent Tree Country Club. Bruins senior Andrew Feandes brought home the individual honors with a total of 41 points.
