La Mirada goes for girls soccer regional title

It’s supposed to be difficult to beat the same team two times during one season. What about twice in eight days?

La Mirada, seeking its first CIF State Southe Califoia Regional girls soccer championship, will give it a try.

The host Matadores, who have won the past two CIF Southe Section Division 4 titles vs. Moorpark, including eight days ago, will attempt for a three-peat against the Musketeers when they meet for the Division IV title on Saturday.

La Mirada has won 16 consecutive games since a tie to Bellflower in January. The Matadores advanced to the regional final with consecutive 3-1 wins over Southwest of San Diego and Oxnard.

The Matadores are led by senior Maddie Beett, who scored two goals and had an assist in the 3-1 victory over Oxnard in the semifinals. Amanda Duran, who had a goal vs. Oxnard, and Natalie Day also keys the attack. Melissa Torres is the goalie. Beett and Duran also had goals in last week’s 4-1 win over Moorpark.

The Musketeers, who advanced with a 3-1 win over Strathmore, are led by Jordyn Geller, who has 19 goals, and Sammi Walker, who has 14. Walker missed the section title game after being disqualified for receiving an ejection in Moorpark’s 2-0 win over Mayfair in the semifinals.

Moorpark opened regional play with a 2-1 win over Alta Loma.
