St. Anthony falls, Poly advances in girls basketball State playoffs

The season came to an end Tuesday night for St. Anthony High’s girls basketball team in a 59-53 road loss to Antelope Valley during the CIF State Division IV Regional semifinals. The Saints had a 21-20 advantage at the half, but managed just four points and trailed 35-25 at the end of the third quarter. After its 29th consecutive victory, Antelope Valley will face La Canada in the regional final on Saturday in a rematch from last season.

POLY 53, CLOVIS WEST 44 >> The Jackrabbits pulled away late in the Open Division second-round contest after Danae Miller delivered a steal and assist on a Da’Jah Jackson layup to put Poly up 48-44 with 1:37 to go. Poly had to come up big late on offense and defense after trailing 43-42 just about midway through the final quarter and rattled off an 11-2 run from there, setting up a regional final appearance against Chaminade on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.

Baseball

GAHR 9, CORONA 2 >> Senior left-hander Chris Corral (5-1) picked up the win for the Gladiators (5-1), whoh tallied their fifth win in a row at UC Riverside. Michael Perez had two hits, including his first home run of the season.

BELLFLOWER 7, SABINO 0 >> The Bucs put up five runs in the first iing and Ricky Ramos threw his second consecutive complete-game shutout at the Lancer Baseball Classic in Tucson, Ariz. He allowed five hits and no walks while shortstop Aaron Orozco had a double, a triple and a RBI for Bellflower, which will play Suyside tonight at 7.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 5, ONTARIO CHRISTIAN 1 >> The Crusaders improved to 5-2 as Brett Garcia struck out six over six iings en route to the win. Garcia and Zach Krosschell each had two RBIs for V.C., which will host Jordan on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Softball

MAYFAIR 3, WHITTIER 2 >> Sarah Parten delivered a game-wiing double in the seventh iing to lead the Monsoons (2-0) to a nonleague victory. Amanda Canizales and Jade Sanchez each homered for Whittier (6-1).

WILSON 15, CABRILLO 0 (5 INNINGS) >> The Bruins rolled at home behind 13 hits, including home runs from sophomore Katelyn Howard and freshman McKenzie Barbara. Joette Vega and Savaah Gonzalez combined for eight strikeouts and no walks in a two-hit shutout.

Boys volleyball

BELLFLOWER 3, GLENN 0 >> The Bucs rolled to a 25-11, 25-11, 25-16 sweep at home behind 12 kills from Arick Mom and nine from Kevin Ho.

LAKEWOOD 3, WILSON 1 >> Despite wiing the opening set and getting 14 kills from Kealii Pa’aluhi and 13 from Matt Miller, the Bruins fell to the Lancers by a score of 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, CALIFORNIA 0 >> Miller Davis (eight kills), Spencer Fredrick (seven kills) and Jon Fey (22 assists) paced the Crusaders, who improved to 5-0 with a 25-9, 25-17, 25-21 sweep.

POLY 21, MILLIKAN 0 >> The Jackrabbits handed the Rams their first loss of the season and improved to 4-0 in Moore League play with a clean sweep at home.

Boys golf

LOS ALAMITOS 382, POLY 398 >> Ellis Tirado anchored the Griffins on Monday at Big Rec Golf Course with an even-par round of 72 en rout to the nonleague win. Jericho Betts paced the Jackrabbits (3-2) at 73.

Gymnastics

Wilson’s Ashley Lloyd had a big afteoon Friday at the Moore League Preview Meet, taking first place in the vault with a score of 8.8, the beam (9.1), floor exercise (9.0) and all-around (35.2). As a team, the Bruins placed second with 157.9 points, just behind Lakewood (163.6) and ahead of St. Joseph (151).
