Area roundup: Lakewood boys volleyball sweeps Long Beach Poly

LONG BEACH >> What looked like an early clash of undefeated top Moore League boys volleyball teams instead tued into a coming-out party for Lakewood on Tuesday afteoon.

Both teams have been ranked for most of the year in the CIF Southe Section Division 2 poll, just one spot apart. But the Lancers proved to be a full cut above in a 25-13, 25-21, 25-14 road win.

“That was a nice one,” Lakewood coach Devon Taylor said. “For us, we just wanted to go in and do our jobs. We don’t do a lot of game-plaing for the other side. We just want to serve tough and play good defense behind it.”

Lakewood’s serve bothered the Jackrabbits from start to finish. Poly’s passing never became consistent. The match also served as a coming-out party for Lakewood freshman Teilon Tufuga, the younger brother of 2014 Dream Team Player of the Year Storm Fa’agata.

Tufuga showcased a complete game with 10 kills and nine digs, jumping high for big swings, but also playing solid defense.

“He plays with a lot of style,” said Taylor, who starts another talented young Tufuga in sophomore setter Kyler Tufuga, who had 28 assists. “We’re really young, but we have some guys.”

The Lancers jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first set and a 9-1 lead in the second set. It’s the continuation of a great week so far for the Lancers, who won the Division 2 bracket in the Orange County Championships on Monday night with Kyler Tufuga eaing MVP honors.

“Our goal every year is to win a touament, win the Moore League and make a run in CIF,” said Taylor, whose team is the reigning league champ.

Poly was led by USC commit Sam Lewis with seven kills.

LOS ALAMITOS 6, GAHR 4 >> Junior first baseman Lindsi Deis delivered a two-run single in the sixth iing on Tuesday to complete a Griffin comeback. The Gladiators (10-4-1) took a 3-2 lead on Dejanae Davis’ fifth-iing RBI single. Junior Ryan Denhart eaed the victory for the Griffins (11-1), striking out seven.

LONG BEACH POLY 3, WILSON 2 >> For the first time since 2008, the Jackrabbits (5-2, 2-0) edged the rival Bruins in Moore League play. Serena Pangelinan’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth iing gave Poly the lead for good. Pitcher Qui Marchio picked up the win.

CABRILLO 13, JORDAN 1 >> Briaa Deanda threw a five-iing no hitter in the Jaguars mercy-rule Moore League win. She finished with 11 strikeouts. Catcher Sherese Onwu hit a two-run home run and finished with four RBIs.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 4, HERITAGE CHRISTIAN 0 >> The Crusaders (8-2, 1-0) opened Olympic League with a complete-game shutout victory for pitcher Brett Garcia, who gave up three hits and struck out five. R.J. Van Kampen had two hits and Zach Krosschell had two RBIs.
