Area roundup: Cabrillo beats Jordan in Moore League baseball opener; LBCC volleyball team wins 13th in a row

Cabrillo High School’s baseball team picked up a 6-4 Moore League-opening victory over Jordan on Wednesday afteoon behind the play of Brian Murillo (3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored), Sam Letofski (two RBIs) and an RBI apiece from Roy Gordo, Joseph Martinez and Gabriel Rodriguez.

After the Panthers (0-7) took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the fourth iing, Cabrillo (3-5) responded with three of its own in the fifth to reclaim the advantage for good.

Anthony Gambino got the win, striking out one and walking two over 3 2/3 iings.

The Jaguars will play at Lakewood today at 3 p.m. and Jordan will be at Poly on Friday afteoon.

Boys volleyball

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, WEST TORRANCE 0 >> The Crusaders improved to 13-2 with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 sweep at home behind the play of junior Miller Davis (21 kills, 17 digs) and senior Jon Fey (41 assists).

Boys golf

POLY 406, ST. JOHN BOSCO 447 >> Jericho Betts eaed low medalist honors for the Jackrabbits with a 73 at the Big Rec Golf Course.

Charles Hughes Sr. was the low finisher for the Braves with an 82.

Community college men’s volleyball

LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE 3, L.A. TRADE TECH 0 >> It took the Vikings (13-2, 6-0) just 56 minutes to score its 13th consecutive win, a 25-16, 25-10, 25-10 Weste State Conference sweep at home.

The win also came with a lot of second team players seeing extended playing time. Freshman Taylor Dorr Kona had 18 of LBCC’s 35 kills while hitting .464 and getting five digs and three aces against winless Trade-Tech (0-8, 0-5).

Freshman setter Jayce Ashment had 28 assists, four aces and two blocks and freshman Michael Huchel (Valley Christian High) had six kills, five digs and three blocks.

Long Beach will play host to Santa Barbara City College on Friday at 6 p.m. in a conference match.
