Poly boys volleyball team beats Cabrillo in four sets

LONG BEACH >> After suffering their first Moore League loss to Lakewood earlier in the week, the Long Beach Poly boys volleyball team bounced back with a home win against a gritty Cabrillo team, scoring a 25-12, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19 victory.

It looked to be a complete tu around from their start in the Lakewood match on Tuesday, as Poly looked loose from the opening serve and rode to victory.

“We looked more comfortable out there today,” said Poly coach Justin Oleole about the win. “We have all of the talent in the world. If we just find our chemistry, we can be an amazing team.”

The Jackrabbits looked to be cruising in the first two sets of the match, but Cabrillo played tough defense and fought for every point to hold on to a tight third set and extend the match.

“We start slow every game,” said Cabrillo coach Ray Quinto. “When we find our groove, we play well and we can be one of the best teams in the Moore League.”

Cabrillo battled in the final set, keeping it close, but Poly found the right rotation and stayed consistent with their game plan: set Sam Lewis.

The USC commit Lewis, and his setter Kristian Tafao, worked well together as Lewis led the way with 26 kills for the Jackrabbits. Tafao was able to find Lewis all over the court and his big swings made it difficult on the Jaguars back line.

Cabrillo Senior Denaylan Fuimaono had 14 kills and 3 digs as the Jaguars fall to 2-2 in the Moore League. They take on first place Lakewood at home after spring break.

The Poly Jackrabbits righted the ship and they improved to 4-1 in league with their next game being next Tuesday on the road at Compton.
