LBCC men's volleyball continues win streak

The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball swept to a 14th consecutive victory Friday with a 25-16, 26-24, 25-18 Weste State Conference victory over Santa Barbara. Sophomore Joshua Nehls led with 15 kills and eight digs, with freshman Andrew Pearson chipping in 11 kills.

LBCC retus to action next Friday when it hosts L.A. Pierce College at 6 p.m.

The No. 4-ranked Long Beach State men’s team hosts a critical Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match tonight at 7 against UCLA. Long Beach and the Bruins are part of a four-way tie for first atop the nation’s best conference, along with Stanford and BYU.

NCAA track

Junior Riley Cooks won the heptathlon at the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic on Friday, en route to establishing a new school record in the event. Sophomore Herman Day won the decathlon as well.

Cooks compiled 5,569 points, which breaks a 25-year old school record set by Ami Ice in 1991 (5,521 points). Cooks also holds school records in the 60-meter hurdles and the pentathlon.

NCAA beach volleyball

No. 6 Long Beach State dropped the top flight in competition against LMU and Cal at the LBSU sand courts on Friday afteoon, but rebounded to win the other matches of the day, defeating both opponents 4-1.

Long Beach will take part in a three-way match at CSU Northridge on Thursday, before retuing home to host Arizona at noon next Friday.
