Clayton Kershaw shines in final spring tuneup

Clayton Kershaw worked three scoreless iings, giving up two hits and striking out four in the Dodgers’ final Cactus League game, a 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday in Glendale, Arizona.

The Dodgers open the three-game Freeway Series against the Angels tonight at Dodger Stadium.

Kershaw will start opening day for the sixth straight year at San Diego on Monday.

“It’s nice to finish up and get your work in,” he said. “Now, it counts.”

The Indians scored two runs on a pair of RBI doubles off Carlos Frias, who took over for Kershaw in the fourth. Juan Uribe, a former Dodgers infielder, hit the first one to left field. Roberto Perez followed with another one to right.

Kershaw will be the first Dodgers pitcher to make six consecutive opening day starts since Don Sutton set the franchise record with seven.

Looking for leadoff

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts left Arizona uncertain about who is his leadoff batter. Andre Ethier was a possibility, but that was before a fractured right leg put Ethier on the sidelines for 10 to 14 weeks.

“I haven’t made that decision yet,” Roberts said.

Chase Utley is an option, Roberts said. He was at the top of the order Wednesday.

Injury updates

It appears the Dodgers’ Corey Seager has recovered from a sprained left ankle. Roberts said Seager, who was off Wednesday, would start at shortstop tonight and play five iings against the Angels. ... Catcher Yasamni Grandal (right forearm) is expected to play in a minor league game today in Arizona. Roberts hopes he’ll join the club in Anaheim against the Angels on Saturday. ... There’s still no timetable on when second baseman Howie Kendrick (left calf) will be able to play. He will stay in Arizona for ongoing rehab. ... Left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu also will stay in Arizona and continue to work his way back from shoulder surgery.

Yankees’ Miller hurt

The New York Yankees’ heralded bullpen depth could be tested early.

Andrew Miller broke his non-pitching wrist when struck on the right arm by a line drive in the seventh iing of New York’s 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.

The left-hander threw his glove and walked into the Yankees’ dugout after pinch-hitter Willians Astudillo’s comebacker went off his arm, just above the wrist. X-rays were negative, but a CT scan revealed a chip fracture.

“He will see a hand specialist, who will determine the next course of action,” New York said in a statement.

Miller was the Yankees’ closer last year and was slated to fill that role while Aroldis Chapman serves a 30-game suspension under baseball’s new domestic abuse policy. If Miller is sidelined, Dellin Betances would open the season as closer.

No charges for Reyes

Maui prosecutors are moving to dismiss a domestic abuse charge against suspended Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes.

Deputy Prosecuting Attoey Kerry Glen said she’s dropping the case because Reyes’ wife isn’t cooperating.

Reyes was scheduled to go to trial next Monday. He pleaded not guilty to abusing a family or household member.

Reyes was arrested Oct. 31 at the Wailea Four Seasons Resort. According to a recording of a 911 call released by police, a hotel security guard reported the woman had injuries to her leg and scratches on her neck.

Reyes was released after posting $1,000 bail and was ordered to stay away from his wife for three days.

He was placed on paid leave under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy pending completion of the criminal proceedings.

Bauer out of rotation

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona has finalized his starting rotation, and it doesn’t include Trevor Bauer.

Francona said that Bauer, who won 11 games last season, will begin the season in a relief role. Cody Anderson and Josh Tomlin have been named the team’s No. 4 and No. 5 starters.

Bauer, the former UCLA standout, had a solid training camp, but the Indians feel Anderson and Tomlin are better suited for starting roles. The 25-year-old Bauer went 11-12 in 30 starts last season but finished the year pitching out of the bullpen. He’s 17-22 in three seasons with Cleveland, which acquired him a three-team trade in 2012 from Arizona.

Anderson and Tomlin will follow Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Day Salazar in Cleveland’s rotation.
