Area roundup: Long Beach State adds eight women's soccer players: softball team wins two

The Long Beach State women’s soccer program aounced the addition of eight new players for the 2016-17 season.

Twelfth-year head coach Mauricio Ingrassia is very pleased with the quality of his signees and said LBSU’s five trips to the NCAA Touament in the past eight years have helped with recruiting.

“This class adds to the depth and quality of our squad,” Ingrassia said. “We are bringing in some outstanding young people but we have a mature team, so breaking in will be a challenge.”

The player with the best chance of starting next season is one of two inteational recruits, Chloe Froment from Lyon, France. The defender was a member of the French Youth National Team and played on the Olympique Lyoais club team, wiing the French U19 championship in 2014.

“(Froment) is special,” Ingrassia said. “Her vision, her feel for the game, and her technical ability have truly shown. She is available to us this spring, so she will be well adjusted come fall.”

Malin Lindholm, also a defender and member of the Swedish National Teams, rounds out the first inteational class under Ingrassia.

Ingrassia’s Beach FC club team also delivered a quality player in forward Taylor Bistline. She helped Beach FC win the U.S. Youth Soccer National, Far West Regional and National Cup championships.

West Torrance High also delivered two players who were Daily Breeze All-Area selections. Kaitlin Fregulia is an all-around player who was the league offensive MVP as a junior. She was part of Beach FC and is a four-year member of the Olympic Development Program (2012-15). Megan McComas is a midfielder from West Torrance and is also a member of Beach Futbol Club.

Kailee “Kai” Prescott is a forward who helped La Quinta High advance to the CIF-SS Division 5 semifinals in 2013, 2015 and 2016. She was named All-CIF as a senior and is a four-year member of Arsenal ECNL.

Two Northe Califoia talents round out the class. Nayeli Cruz is a athletic utility player from Oakland, and Mackenzie Magaoay is a forward from Vacaville who scored 13 goals as a freshman, 17 as a sophomore and 29 as a junior at Will C. Wood High.

The 2016-17 schedule will be released later next month.

College softball

Long Beach State (20-11) swept a doubleheader at Loyola Marymount, closing out its nonconference slate with a 9-1, six-iings win and a 7-4 victory over the Lions (22-16).

Stephanie Maciel hit a first-iing home run for Loyola in the first game, but Clermont struck out 11 in a complete-game effort to get her 12th win of the season.

Long Beach took the lead for the first time in the fifth iing on a three-run homer from Lauren MacLeod, her fifth of the season, and then added five more in the sixth on a two-run single by Tierra Falo and a three-run shot from Darian Tautalafua.

The Beach scored twice in the first iing of the second game, and then LT Torres hit a grand slam in the second iing to make the score 6-0.

Long Beach State begins Big West play this weekend, traveling to Cal State Northridge for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday.

Women’s water polo

Long Beach State senior goalie Alexis Butler was named Big West Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Wednesday, and the 49ers jumped to No. 16 in the national rankings this week after defeating then-No. 5 UC Davis.

Butler had nine saves in the 8-4 victory and held the Aggies to 4-of-30 shooting. She had six saves in the second half and shut Davis out in the third quarter.

Butler also had seven stops against No. 8 Califoia, which brought her to more than 100 saves for the first time in her career (102) at the Beach.
