Moore League baseball enjoys spring break tournaments

The top four Moore League baseball teams have had relatively successful trips to spring break touaments this week.

Millikan (11-5, 2-0 Moore League) won three games at the Ryan Lemmon Memorial Touament to reach the final, where it fell to Marina in a pitchers’ duel, 2-1, on Wednesday night. Ram ace pitcher Michael Killeen went the distance while giving up one eaed run, striking out six and allowing four hits.

Shortstop Spencer Steer led Millikan offensively with four hits, five runs scored and two stolen bases in the four touament games. He also picked up the win on the mound against Tustin in the second game. Senior Adam Knight had seven hits and three RBIs this week while Andrew Talley had three RBIs against Pacifica to help the Rams reach the final.

Wilson (9-7, 1-1) dropped its first game of the Anaheim Lions Touament to St. Francis, 6-0, but bounced back to win its final four games of the week. The Bruins outscored Bishop Manogue, San Dimas, Hemet and Taylorsville by a combined score of 26-7. Senior Taer Meckes had five hits, one in each of the wins, with two RBIs and scored two runs. Senior Jack Williford chipped in six hits, four RBIs and four runs scored in the touament. He also pitched six iings in the win over Hemet, during which he stuck out seven with no walks.

Lakewood (9-5, 2-0) has won two of its first three games at the Reghetti Touament after blanking Lompoc on Thursday, 10-0. The Lancers continue the touament on Friday.

Poly (9-7, 1-1) won two games at the Ryan Lemmon Memorial Touament, and were knocked into the losers’ bracket by eventual champion Marina. Senior Ian Konek led the Jackrabbits with five hits and three runs scored in the four games this week. Sophomore Mike Mauai and junior Je’Von Ward both had three RBIs on the week.

Jackrabbit ace John Vozzella gave up one run in eight iings while senior Jacob Gregg started two games and only allowed three runs.

Next Friday will be the first marquee Moore League double header at Blair Field as Millikan takes on Poly at 3:30 p.m. and Wilson faces Lakewood at 6:30 p.m.
