Area roundup: Mayfair's Pichedwatana keeps national title hopes alive; LBCC men's volleyball team wins 15th in a row

Mayfair High’s Justin Pichedwatana continued his storied senior season Friday with three victories at the boys wrestling National Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The area’s top finisher at last month’s State Championships (fourth place at 160 pounds) has advanced to today’s 160-pound national quarterfinals with wins over New York State champion AJ Aeberli, Wisconsin state champion Seth Vosters and Jared Torch (Ohio).

Action resumes this afteoon.

Baseball

LAKEWOOD 10, ROYAL 5 >> The Lancers (10-5) used an eight-run first iing to pick up a win at the Righetti Touament.

David Rivera paced the offense with three hits, three RBIs and two runs for Lakewood, which retus to Moore League action Tuesday when it hosts Compton at 3:15 p.m.

SOUTH EL MONTE 9, CABRILLO 7 >> The Jaguars (4-9) fell behind 4-1 in the first iing at the Don Lugo Touament.

Gabriel Rodriguez tallied two RBIs for Cabrillo, which has a Moore League contest against Millikan at Blair Field on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

JC men’s volleyball

LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE 3, PIERCE COLLEGE 1 >> The Vikings (15-2, 8-0) extended their wiing streak to 15 matches with a 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20 Weste State Conference victory at home.

Sophomore Joshua Nehls (Warren HS) had a season-high 20 kills and hit a .500 clip to pace LBCC, while freshman Andrew Pearson added 10 kills and nine digs and freshman Gary Trejo (Warren HS) delivered a match-high 42 assists.

Long Beach retus to the court Wednesday for a 6 p.m. WSC match at El Camino.

NCAA men’s volleyball

LONG BEACH STATE 3, PEPPERDINE 2 >> The freshman tandem of Kyle Ensing and TJ DeFalco combined for 53 kills Thursday night to lead the fifth-ranked 49ers (21-5, 15-4 MPSF) to a 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 24-22 road win over the No. 6 Waves.

Ensing had a career-high 27 kills to go along with 10 digs and four blocks, while DeFalco also tued in a double-double with 26 kills and 11 digs.

Junior Andrew Sato finished with 10 digs and is now No. 10 in program history with 676.

With the win, LBSU guaranteed itself a home match in the opening round of the MPSF Touament on April 16 and kept itself alive in the race for the regular-season conference championship.

Matt Tarantino led Pepperdine with 19 kills and nine digs.

Long Beach State will play No. 4 Stanford on the road tonight at 7 p.m. in a battle of national and MPSF powers. Long Beach is one game behind the first-place Cardinal in the conference standings.
