Long Beach Wilson boys golf wins Champions Invitational

For the second time in the last four years, the Long Beach Wilson boys golf program hosted and won the 11th Aual Champions Invitational at The Golf Club at Terra Lago in Indio. The two-day, 54-hole event featured 45 of the top high school teams from Califoia, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Texas, Missouri and Canada.

Wilson’s Andrew Feades finished fourth and teammate Hunter Epson was sixth while freshman Tyler Schafer rounded out the top 10 finishers.

The Bruins will be back at Recreation Park 18 Golf Course on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. to take on Long Beach Poly in Moore League action.

LONG BEACH STATE 1-3, CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 2-2 >> After falling in eight iings in the first game of a Big West Conference-opening doubleheader, the 49ers (21-12, 1-1 Big West) bounced back for the split on the road.

Long Beach State freshman Nichole Fry reached base four times in the second game and hit her first collegiate home run to give the 49ers the lead. Also in the second game, freshman pitcher Skie Munoz picked up the win in her first collegiate start, throwing six iings while allowing six hits with one run allowed.

The series concludes today at 1 p.m.

LONG BEACH STATE 4, UC SANTA BARBARA 3>> The No. 67-ranked 49ers (13-4, 6-0 Big West) edged the Gauchos (10-7, 3-1) as the defining moment came from the top singles matchup, with LBSU’s Maeva Razakasoa taking on Lou Adler to decide the match. Razakasoa took the first set, 6-3, then dropped set two, 6-2, and fell behind 5-2 in the decisive third set. Razakasoa, the 2014 Big West Player of the Year, rattled off five straight games to complete a furious comeback and give LBSU a narrow victory.
